Rising Above the Rest: A History of High Rise Commercial Roofing

The history of high rise commercial roofing is a story of innovation and engineering advances that have allowed builders to create taller and more complex structures over time.

Early high rise buildings were constructed with flat roofs made of traditional materials like gravel and tar, which were susceptible to damage from water and the elements. The first high rise buildings were limited in height, as the technology to construct taller structures had not yet been developed.

In the early 20th century, the advent of reinforced concrete and steel frames allowed for the construction of taller buildings. These new materials allowed for more complex structures, with steel frames supporting reinforced concrete floors and walls. This allowed architects to design buildings with more intricate shapes and unique features, such as the iconic Chrysler Building in New York City.

As high rise buildings became more common, builders began to focus on improving the roofing materials used in their construction. In the 1950s and 60s, builders began using asphalt-based materials for roofing, which were durable and long-lasting. These materials were also easy to install, making them popular for commercial buildings with large roof areas.

In the 1970s and 80s, builders began experimenting with new roofing materials and techniques, including the use of single-ply membranes and spray-on coatings. These materials were more lightweight and easier to install than traditional roofing materials, and they provided better insulation and protection against the elements.

Today, high rise commercial roofing has advanced even further with the development of green roofing systems, which incorporate vegetation and soil into the roofing structure. These systems provide a number of environmental benefits, including improved insulation, reduced energy use, and the ability to capture and filter rainwater.

As high rise buildings continue to grow in height and complexity, the roofing materials and techniques used in their construction will continue to evolve. With the emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency in modern construction, it's likely that we'll see even more innovation in high rise roofing systems in the years to come.
